The California Air Resources Board (CARB) has ordered the Volkswagen Group to recall its vehicles equipped with 3.0-liter diesel V6 engines.
Audi, Porsche and Volkswagen are all impacted by the order, which affects over 15,000 vehicles sold in California since 2009. The regulator’s demand follows Audi’s admission that vehicles equipped with the 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine sold since model year 2009 had three “auxiliary emissions control devices” that weren’t properly disclosed to regulators. One of the devices is being defined as a defeat device by regulators, designed to cheat on diesel emissions tests.
Around the U.S., about 85,000 vehicles have been sold equipped with the engine while California has between 15,000 to 16,000. With the formal order issued, the Volkswagen Group will have 45 business days to draft and submit a recall plan to CARB for the affected vehicles.
Earlier this week, Audi made an announcement that it would revise the software in question and submit new applications to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for U.S. government emission certification. Once it is approved by regulators, Audi will provide the updated software to owners.
